The H3R (Heger Reinforcement Rod Ram) is made by starting with a 3ft section of black or gas pipe that has an interior diameter of 1 1/4". Then I had a welder friend take a 3' piece of 3/4" high strength solid steel rod and weld on a 2" piece of 1 1/4" high strength solid steel rod to the end. At the top of the black pipe I had him weld a washer that had a hole that was a bit bigger than the 3/4" section of the rod so the rod would be kept centered as it was pushed down by the boom. The rod was then slid into the black pipe and the end of the rod that sticks out the top end is mushroomed over to keep it from sliding back out of the black pipe. That's it - it took me 3 prototypes to get it right but it works like a charm. Let me know if you have any more questions - would be glad to help.
Dave - do you have a blog set up or any pictures of your progress. Since we are both building the same cabin we should compare notes on our collective progress....
